How to Get to Muhu: A Step-by-Step Guide
Share
Muhu Island, one of Estonia’s hidden gems, is known for its stunning folk costume patterns, cute little villages, and rich cultural heritage. Whether you want to explore its traditional handicrafts, relax in the green surroundings, or connect with the local Estonian way of life, getting to Muhu is relatively easy and straightforward. Here’s a practical guide on how to reach this majikal island from Tallinn.
Getting to Muhu from Tallinn
The journey to Muhu Island can be broken down into two main routes: a direct, a drive through Lihula or a more scenic, leisurely route through Pärnu. If you choose this one, I recommend taking a few days to get to Muhu. Both options will take you to the ferry terminal in Virtsu, from which you’ll take a short ferry ride to Muhu. Here’s what you need to know about each route:
1. Direct Route via Lihula
The fastest and most straightforward way to get to Muhu from Tallinn is by car. Start by driving from Tallinn along the E263 highway, passing through Lihula, and continuing on to Virtsu, where you’ll catch the ferry to Muhu. The entire drive takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic. This is a great option for those looking to get to Muhu quickly and without any detours.
Once you arrive in Virtsu, you’ll find the ferry terminal, where you can board a ferry that will take you directly to Muhu Island. The ferry ride is short, only about 30 minutes, where you will see some beautiful little islands.
2. Scenic Route via Pärnu
For those who want to make the most of their journey, and have the time, the scenic route through Pärnu is a great option. Pärnu is a lovely little city known for its beach and young vibrant atmosphere with a number of käsitöö shops in the main street. I recommend staying here for a night, especially in the summer as they have newly renovated the beach front with some lovely little cafes and often something happening at night.
From Pärnu, you’ll continue south along the E263 highway to Virtsu, where you’ll catch the ferry to Muhu. This route adds an extra hour or so, or a few days, to your trip, but it is worth it to experience more of Estonia’s beauty before you arrive on the island.
3. Ferry Ride to Muhu
Whether you take the direct or scenic route, the final leg of your journey will be the ferry crossing to Muhu Island. Ferries run frequently between Virtsu and Muhu, with departures every 30 minutes or so. It’s highly recommended to book your ferry tickets in advance, especially during the busy tourist season, to ensure you secure a spot.
Make sure to be on time for your ferry departure, as the loading process is quick, often taking just five minutes. You don’t want to miss your ride! This amazed me when mum and I did it in 2023!
