Day 15 – Rain and Rongkäik

Day 15 – Rain and Rongkäik

Read full story and photos here.

Today was a slower-paced day, which was very welcome. We started by working on some secret projects (more to come soon!) before heading into Tallinn's Old Town. I called Mum and Dad and found them on Vene Tänav, the same street where my grandpa lived as a child. Our first stop, though, was the pancake house, where I had chantarelle pasta, though there were more sundried tomatoes than mushrooms!

Mum showed me some of her beautiful purchases, including a book filled with stunning designs, definite inspiration for Estonian Designs AU. After lunch, we walked to Vene 12. My grandpa lived there, and every visit brings out memories of his childhood stories, sliding down the banisters and playing in the stairwell. Dad pointed out the exact apartment, and I stood halfway up the stairs, just taking in the moment. It’s always powerful to imagine him there, before the war in 1944.

We explored some shops, one of my favourites wasn’t quite the same this time, with fewer Estonian-style products. Still, we found some gems, including a cute Setomaa toothpick holder. Prices varied wildly from shop to shop, but I did treat myself to a woollen poncho, 20% off, to celebrate my new job as an Associate Lecturer in Nursing. A small reward for hard work.

We stopped at the antique store again in search of a freedom cross, but at €1650, it was a little out of reach. Then we caught a Bolt to get past the parade (Rongkäik) due to the rain, and got a fascinating history lesson from our driver on the way.

Dinner was with Denis, my “Estonian brother.” I cooked pork mince with chantarelles and spices, an Estonian favourite. It was lovely to unwind, share memories, and dream about a future Aussie visit. A much-needed, meaningful day.
