Collection: Viru-Nigula

The parish of Viru-Nigula is located on the northern coast of Virumaa, by the Gulf of Finland. The parish was founded in the 1220s on the territory of the ancient Mahu parish. It was bordered by Lüganuse to the east, Haljala and Rakvere to the west, and Viru-Jaagupi to the south. Due to its location, the local coastal people had lively interactions with the Finns, especially the inhabitants of the islands of the Gulf of Finland.
