Collection: Muhu

Muhu (German: Mohn ) parish was located on the island of Muhu. Administratively, the former Muhu parish overlapped with the current Muhu municipality.

In Saare County, folk costumes survived the longest on the island of Muhu. While the era of wearing folk costumes on Saaremaa generally ended at the beginning of the 20th century, on Muhu they underwent significant development in the following decades. As late as the 1930s, traditional folk costumes were worn, especially for festive occasions. Individual pieces such as the skirt and the tanu were sometimes still worn after World War II.

Unlike on the mainland, in Muhu, a maiden also had an apron. It was worn after the camp and mainly with a wedding suit. In Muhu, a belt was not common, but instead narrow and long belts woven with beads were made. Unlike in Saaremaa, a woman in Muhu wore a skirt until the end of the 19th century. As elsewhere in Saaremaa, in Muhu it was customary to wear older, out-of-fashion clothes with a wedding suit.
