Collection: Jõhvi

Jõhvi was a historical parish in Virumaa. Jõhvi's neighboring parishes were Lüganuse, Vaivara, and Iisaku. Iisaku was finally separated from Jõhvi parish in 1867.

Due to its location, Jõhvi has been a contact area for different peoples throughout history. The coastal people here had lively interactions with the Finns, especially the inhabitants of the islands in the Gulf of Finland. In the east, direct contacts opened up with the Votyan-Izhorian and Ingrian-Finnish population and with the Russians. Over the centuries, many Votyan-Russian mixed populations also settled in the Iisaku parish from across the Narva River.

The folk costumes of Jõhvi belong to a relatively uniform group of North Estonian folk costumes. However, there were also local differences.
